1. Assess the situation and check the basics.

Sometimes, the issue can be a simple fix. Here are some basic checks you can perform.

  • Check the power supply
  • Check the door is closing properly
  • Check the water supply
  • Check the settings you have selected

2. Check the manual for helpful tips.

If you still have the manual, many manufacturers will list some troubleshooting tips.  If you do not have a copy, you can often find a digital version online by searching for your washing machine's make and model.

3. Check if your washing machine is still under warranty.

If you purchased the machine within the last year, it's more than likely covered under warranty.

  • Check the machine manufacturer's website and contact them directly.
  • Can you recall buying an extended warranty when you purchased the machine? If so, you could still be covered, depending on the cover you took out.

4. Is your machine covered under the Consumer Rights Act?

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 states that all products must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. Retailers must accept that a fault appearing during the first six months existed when the product was purchased by you.  In this case, you have the right to a repair or replacement; if this fails, you will receive a refund.   You can contact the retailer directly to resolve the situation.

5. Check your household insurance policy

Home insurance policies may cover appliances, but the extent of coverage can vary between policies. Typically, appliances are covered if they are damaged or destroyed by a situation listed in your policy, such as fire, theft, or water damage. However, normal wear and tear or mechanical failure may not be covered. Reviewing your policy details or speaking with your insurance provider to understand what is and isn't covered is essential.

6.Get a quote for a repair.

When you have covered the basics and checked warranty and insurance, get a quote for a repair. This may be a more cost-effective solution than a full replacement. You can find and read reviews of providers near you on websites such as Checkatrade. You can check their reviews to help you select a reputable company. They may offer you a free, no-obligation quote.

7. Replacement.

If you have gone through all the steps above and the machine is beyond repair, follow these steps:

1. Check if there are any second-hand sales near you.

2. Try saving for a few weeks to reduce the amount you need to borrow. Is there a local launderette nearby that could tide you over, or a friend or family member you can turn to for support while you save?

3. Shop around for the best deal

4. Check if you can save more by using Afforda discounts

5. You can check our Afforda credit options page if you need to take out a loan to support some or all of the purchase.

How to dispose of your old washing machine

If you buy from a retailer, they may offer a free delivery service. They will also take your old washing machine away and install the new one.

If you are buying a second-hand washing machine, you can contact your local council. Many offer a bulky household collection service for a fee.
